Mycotoxin Testing. Mycotoxins are a group of secondary metabolites of molds, commonly found as a contaminant in a wide range of crops. Although mold plays an essential role in the natural decomposition and recycling of organic material, including cannabis plants, the mycotoxins they can produce
are incredibly harmful.
The toxic (and sometimes deadly) effects of mycotoxins have been extensively documented, making it vital that cannabis products intended for consumption are not contaminated. Even in small quantities, mycotoxins can cause significant issues in normal cell functions, potentially leading to immune suppression, cancer, congenital disabilities, and numerous other conditions.
Aflatoxins and ochratoxins are the two primary types of mycotoxins commonly associated with cannabis plants. Each one is the by-product of specific fungal species (Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillius niger, Aspergillus parasiticus, and others for aflatoxins, and Penicillium verrucosum as well as Aspergillus ochraceus for ochratoxins). Because these specific mycotoxins can naturally occur within cannabis crops and are particularly prevalent in solvent-based concentrates, the Colorado MED regulations outline specific expectations for laboratory mycotoxin testing.
Colorado State Laws for Mycotoxin Testing
According to Colorado MED regulations, all cannabis concentrates produced using materials that have failed required yeast and mold testing must undergo mycotoxin testing. In addition, all flower batches that undergo decontamination due to failing initial microbial contaminant testing are also required to be tested for mycotoxins after the two microbial retests are performed. Concentrates are specifically noted due to the heat stability of mycotoxins, and the fact that the process of producing cannabis extracts can concentrate existing mycotoxins.
The MED has placed the following limited on mycotoxins in remediated concentrates and decontaminated flowers:
Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2
- Each of the above aflatoxins has a set limit of 20 parts per billion (ppb)
- Any combination of Aflatoxin B1, B2, G1, and G2 is also limited to 20 parts per billion.
Ochratoxin A
- Ochratoxin A is limited to a total of 20 parts per billion (ppb)
